Abstract

This paper demonstrates how a storytelling program can be an important tool to promote social integration by significantly enhancing mutual understanding among diverse individuals to support national unification. This storytelling activity was designed and implemented in 2014 as part of the development of the Korea Institute for National Unification’s education program. This study examines the ways in which participants created a sense of self and shared empathy in their social relationships with other group members through the communicative practice of personal narratives. Storytelling activities provided the participants with opportunities to understand one another and to experience social integration. The data were collected from participant observations during storytelling activities and semi-structured and focus group interviews with 16 participants.
