Abstract

This study investigated the influence of two STEAM programs focused on data science and AI on fifth and sixth graders' attitudes toward mathematics and science. By incorporating project-based learning, these programs merged mathematical concepts with technology, information and computer education, and the Arts, engaging 191 students in both in-person and online settings because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pre- and post-program surveys, analyzed through latent transition analysis, showed marked improvements in attitude, especially among students who were initially less inclined toward these subjects. The findings suggest that STEAM education, particularly when integrating data science and AI, significantly enhances student engagement and interest, demonstrating its effectiveness across different student demographics despite the challenges blended learning environments pose.
