- Dr. George Psacharopoulos’ Lecture on International Education Evidence of Human Resources Development and Economic Growth
On April 29, 2003, KEDI organized a joint seminar with Korean Society for the Economics and Finance of Education. During this seminar, Dr. George Psacharopoulos, Visiting Professor of Economics at the University of Athens, Greece and Dr. Chon-Sun Ihm, Professor of Department of Education at the Sejong University were invited as lecturers. Dr. Psacharopoulos gave a lecture on International Education Evidence of Human Resources Development and Economic Growth. He mentioned that the estimates of returns to investment in education based on economic growth reaffirm the importance of human resources development. Also, he said that the rise in earnings inequality experienced during the 1980s and 1990s in many countries led to renewed interest in estimates of returns to school. And Dr. Ihm presented lecture, Political Economy of Education and Human Resource Policy Reform in Korea. He briefly reviewed the historic development of national education and human resources policy and suggested that greater autonomy and diversification in education, greater flexibility of school curricula, and new approaches to student selection and curriculum in higher education are needed for future education.
