Raising the quality of gifted and talented education through interdisciplinary learning
This study aims to diagnose the current state of interdisciplinary learning in institutions for gifted and talented education (“G/T education”) and propose ways to raise the quality of G/T education through interdisciplinary learning. To provide a background for the discussion of interdisciplinary learning, this study first looks into current backdrop of the features of the “creation economy” society and the 4th industrial revolution. Then, it examines South Korea’s distinctive social and cultural characteristics and its educational landscape centered around entrance examinations. It was found that despite the changing educational paradigms and portrait of a leader that G/T education seeks to foster in line with the times, the socio-cultural importance of academic degrees and the educational landscape defined by entrance examinations greatly inhibit changes from being made in education toward interdisciplinary learning.
