Development of the Self-help Group Programmes for Child Education of Multicultural Families

Recently, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of children of multicultural family by the increase of international marriage. Among those children, many of them are at the age of entering schools. Hence, there is a general agreement on the need of systematic support for raising these children as sound members of the Korean society. However, the migrant women in multicultural families, who are the key player in their children’s education, are facing complex problems such as re-socialization and re-culturalization and at the same time, having difficulties in operating the parents’ role. The self-help group programme will be expected to play an important role as the social support for strengthening the capacity of educating children of women immigrants in intermarriages with Korean husbands.

Objectives of this research are: 1) through self-help group programme, making the women immigrants and Korean husbands becoming the main players to deal with the difficult issue of children education in multicultural family. 2) developing the education and activity programmes towards competence strengthening in educating children, 3) suggesting effective operation systems.
