This study investigates the origin, status, and characteristics of the South Korean Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy for adult literacy learners, known as the Academic Career Acknowledgement System for Adult Learners (ACASAL), which enables learners to receive recognition for their educational attainments once they complete the program. ACASAL shares many features with other RPL systems that accredit prior learning experiences as a form of educational attainment. However, ACASAL has its own perspective reflecting Korean historical contexts on adult literacy. This study analyzes ACASAL as a system of RPLs for adult literacy learners and suggests other theoretical possibilities as well as potential RPL policy developments.
